Sha Tin Hong Kong Heritage Museum|Miss You Much.Leslie 70th Birthday.Exhibition
Description
Leslie Cheung (1956–2003), fondly remembered by his fans as Gor-gor (literally big brother in Cantonese), is an icon of Hong Kong popular culture. His huge discography, filmography and television work are still enjoyed and well-loved by many. He was a talent of extraordinary range, constantly pushing his own boundaries and dominating the Hong Kong music scene. His musical journey reached far beyond the city, taking him on world tours to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, and driving Hong Kong pop music onto the international stage. In the realm of film, he also appeared in over 50 works, excelling in a diverse array of roles. With his distinctive charisma and effortless, expressive acting style, he created many unforgettable characters, earning accolades at the Hong Kong Film Awards and various international honours. Gor-gor’s works have not only accompanied an entire generation as they grew up, but, with the development of the internet, also continued to spread online, giving rise to the phenomenon of “Post-Leslie’ fans”.
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Leslie Cheung’s birth, this exhibition features a rich selection of exhibits, including vinyl records, stage costumes, film posters and stills, awards, and popular culture items. Complemented with thoughtfully designed multimedia programmes and photo spots, the exhibition will also recreate the interior settings of Gor-gor’s former residence for the first time. It aims to revisit Leslie Cheung’s outstanding achievements in music and film, trace the cross-regional reach of his artistic career, and celebrate the enduring influence of his film and television work. It offers the public an opportunity to honour and remember this legendary star.
Special thanks to Mr Daffy Tong for sharing the personal collection of Mr Leslie Cheung with us.
